Before it is complete, the man and the young granddaughter are found dead while the blind healer is left in shock but alive. Three weeks later, in a hotel room on the reservation, an older Native man who saw the helicopter fly over his land seeks a traditional purification ceremony from a respected healer and her granddaughter. The helicopter is last seen heading towards reservation lands and then disappears from existence. In the pilot, "Monster Slayer," the series opens with the bold 1971 robbery of an armored bank truck via an organized operation involving a helicopter, bombs, and masked and uniformed thieves who flew away before the police even knew what was happening. But he’s also trusted by many, including his staff, as someone looking out for the general welfare of those he serves and protects. Because of that, he’s considered a traitor by some for his enforcement of prior crimes that hurt his community. Joe Leaphorn is a man straddling two worlds: the one in which he was raised in the culture and customs of his people and the one in which he upholds “outside laws” as a police officer for the reservation and state. The writing and acting in Dark Winds gives us a fascinating cultural immersion into the world of the Navajo, exposing the societal, political, and cultural complexities that creates a tapestry of problems unique to the compelling investigation.Īs developed by executive producer Graham Roland ( Jack Ryan), Dark Winds is a series crafted by Native American writers with a 95% Native American cast, led by the outstanding Zahn McClarnon. The strange behaviors of some residents and newcomers coalesce with the personal stories of the three cops, and their complicated relationships with one another, their people, and the white people who come onto their land. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon), his new deputy Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon), and sergeant Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten), who were all born on the res and know their communities in a way no outsiders ever will. Doing the legwork on the reservation are Lt. Set on the Navajo reservation near Monument Valley in the 1970s, the series follows the FBI investigation of a daring bank robbery in Gallup, New Mexico, and the Navajo Tribal inquiry into the local murder of two Native residents, which are revealed to be intertwined. Dark Winds, the AMC adaptation of Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novel, The Dark Wind, proves that by crafting an engaging thriller/mystery that is told by, set in the lands of, and is primarily about Native Americans. That’s to say nothing of Voight, who connected with Anna on a deeply personal level and is likely to feel responsible for her lashing out.Sometimes all it takes to invigorate a standard genre of storytelling is just letting a different perspective take the reins. We don’t get much time to mourn with the team, so it’s unclear how Anna’s death is going to impact their morale. The IU attempts to rush Anna to the hospital, but she’s pronounced dead upon her arrival. He’s shocked by the turn of events, and before he has a chance to react, Upton pulls out her gun and opens fire on Anna. Voight manages to track Anna to a gas station, but rather than go quietly she pulls out a gun and shoots the veteran policeman in the shoulder. This order leads to a divide within the IU, with Halstead and Upton deciding to follow Voight and make sure there wasn’t a repeat of the Roy situation from last season. Voight goes as far as to order the team to clean up the evidence linking Anna to Escano’s murder. It’s clear that Anna has stopped trusting him, and has decided to go off the reservation in an attempt to protect herself. Voight and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) find Escano on the floor of his bakery, shot and bleeding to death.Įscano reveals that Anna stabbed him with his dying breath, which puts Voight in the difficult position of having to put out an arrest warrant on someone he considered to be a confidante. He tries to pull every favor he can in an effort to track Escano down, and he eventually does– though not in the manner he expected. Voight is desperate to bring Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado) in, but their communication is shot because she discovered he was hiding information from her. It turns out she’s just motivated to arrest Escano, who’s still on the run. She was caught in an explosion during last week’s episode, and the cliffhanger ending didn’t make it clear as to whether she would have any major injuries. The episode, titled “Me and You”, opens with the confirmation that Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is fine.
